Powerful Earthquake Hits Alaska
A strong 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck off the southern coast of Alaska on Tuesday around 4:30 p.m. EST. The quake occurred about 54 miles south of Sand Point, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Tsunami Warning Issued
Following the quake, the National Weather Service issued a tsunami warning for parts of Alaska’s southern peninsula. A NOAA map highlighted the areas at risk, which include small coastal communities and the Alaska Peninsula Wildlife National Preserve.
Emergency Response
A state emergency official said, “We’ve had other quakes in the area that didn’t generate significant tsunami waves, but we’re treating this seriously.” Officials ensured that local communities were informed and prepared for possible evacuation.
Aftermath and Monitoring
About an hour after the earthquake, no damage or tsunami waves were reported. The tsunami warning was later downgraded to an advisory, indicating the threat had lessened but authorities remain cautious.
