1. The Flood Came Without Warning
It started like any normal evening—dishes in the sink, kids nearby—until water suddenly surged through the house. “One minute I was washing dishes… then suddenly it was at my ankles, then my knees.” The lights went out. Rain hammered the roof. With no phone and no way out, I rushed upstairs with Liam and Nora.
2. The Stranger in the Yellow Coat
Through the storm, a flashlight appeared. A man in a yellow coat stood waist-deep in the water. “I’m here—just pass them to me!” he called. I handed him my children, and he moved through the flood like he’d done it before. He got them safely to a rescue boat, then turned back. “Wait! What’s your name?” I shouted. He looked back once. “Just tell them someone kept them safe today.”
3. Silent Gratitude
No one knew who he was. We returned briefly to our ruined house. On the stairs: muddy footprints—his. Later, the kids left a crayon drawing on a neighbor’s mailbox: a man in yellow with the words, “THANK YOU – FROM LIAM AND NORA.” I left a note too: “You saved us. Knock if you need anything.”
Weeks passed. Then one day he returned—with tools. “Heard your place took a hit… Figured I could help fix it.” He stayed three days, then disappeared.
4. A Quiet Kind of Hero
Months later, Nora got sick. At the hospital, a nurse said, “There’s a man in the lobby asking about Nora.” He left before I arrived, but gave a note: “She’ll be fine. She’s strong like Mom.” Along with it—a plastic firefighter badge.
I never saw him again. But I stopped looking. Some heroes, I realized, “never need to be known.”
